The Role of Higher Education in Community Development: A Case Study of Community Service (Kuliah Kerja Nyata - KKN) in Rejosari Village, Karanganyar, Central Java
Abstract
Higher education plays a crucial role in developing quality human resources (HR) through the implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, which includes education, research, and community service. Community Service Learning (CSL), or Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) in Indonesian, is an integral part of this implementation, where students engage in community service activities. This study discusses the implementation of CSL in Rejosari Village, Karanganyar, Central Java, involving students from Setia Budi University Surakarta. The CSL activities aim to empower the local community and enhance interaction between higher education institutions, students, and the community. Before CSL implementation, location observation was conducted to understand the village's conditions. CSL activities cover various fields, including health, education, and social empowerment. Through activities such as health checks, social work, school outreach, teaching Islamic studies, healthy gymnastics, and establishing family medicinal gardens, CSL successfully makes positive contributions to the local community. The results indicate that CSL not only benefits the community but also enhances students' social and professional skills development. In conclusion, CSL is an effective instrument in strengthening the relationship between higher education institutions and the community, providing significant benefits to both parties involved.
