THE ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY TEST OF A COMBINATION OF ETHANOL EXTRACTS OF CASSAVA LEAVES (Manihot esculenta Crantz) AND BINAHONG LEAVES (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) AGAINSTT Bacteria Escherichia coli ATCC 25922
Abstract
Cassava leaves and binahong leaves contain alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins. These compounds are hypothesized to exhibit antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of the combination of cassava leaves extract and binahong leaves against the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria.
Cassava leaves and binahong leaves were extracted using the maceration method, then phytochemical test was carried out on the extract. Determination of the Minimum Killing Concentration of cassava leaf and binahong leaf extracts was carried out using the dilution methode. The combination of cassava leaf and binahong leaf extract was made with a ratio of (1:1), (1:3) and (3:1). Determination of antibacterial activity was carried out using the disc diffusion method, and combination effect pattern was performed using the paper tape method. The result were analyzed using SPSS version 26 statistic.
The result showed that cassava leaf extract had a Minimum Killing Concentration value of 6,25% and binahong leaf extract had a Minimum Killing Concentration value of 12,5%. The inhibition of the 1:1 combination was 15,86±0,513, the 1:3 combination was 16,06±0,208, and the 3:1 combination was 18,40±0,556. The most effective combination in inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria is a 3:1 combination and provides a synergistic combination effect against Escherichia coli bacteria.
